Twin Talk

Ok, I give up. Let's just make this "baby week" on See of Love. You've got to see this video. My mom is an identical twin and I sure hope she was this hilarious when she was little.

In other news, it's almost Friday! Hang in there.

In like a lion, out like a....

I don't know went wrong this winter, but March is certainly not going to end quietly in my neck of the woods, and I would not use the phrase "out like a lamb" to describe the weather we've been having lately.  Luckily, I am headed to Richmond this weekend to visit family, including my brand new baby cousin!

I would like to snuggle up with her and this funny guy...

...and read this book (even if I'm the only one paying attention).

Teeny tiny hat

Ben had a shirt...

And it looked so soft and cozy.

Looked like it would better suit my coworker's future baby boy.

So that's what happened to it :)

The Friday Find

Everyone has their own opinion on buying plane tickets: You should use Kayak, or Orbitz, or Expedia; you should buy your tickets on Tuesdays or Wednesdays because that's when it's cheapest. You should take a Friday or a Monday off of work so that you don't get hit with high weekend flight prices.

Well, damn it, that takes a lot of effort.

Low-budget fliers, there is a better way: yapta.com. I only learned about this site yesterday from my friend Lisa. And it is AWESOME. They will track your flight and alert you when the price drops, so that you can get it for less. And if you bought the ticket when it was a little pricey, and the price later drops, they'll start the process for you to get a refund! Seriously! How cool?

P.S. Cherry blossoms are making their way out in DC!! Happy weekend!

Easy Pulled Pork

Just popping in to say a quick "hi" and share some yumminess with you.  My sister recommended this recipe to me the other day and I wasted no time making it; I think I may still have been on the phone with her as I pulled up to the meat counter at Whole Foods.  I have always loved pulled pork but had prematurely labeled it as one of those foods that was too much hassel to make myself.  As you may have guessed, I was wrong about that one and found that this recipe is actually one of the biggest no-brainers around.  All you need is a dutch oven, a large cut of pork shoulder, and a free afternoon.  Enjoy!

New blog alert!

When it comes to food blogs, I have three go-to sites: diary of a locavore (my sis!), smitten kitchen, and orangette.  Between the three of them, I can always find something to make for dinner if my creativity is lacking or I'm in a food rut.  While perusing orangette for culinary inspiration yesterday, I happened upon I made that!, a food blog written by the dessert chef at Delancey (orangette's restaurant).  I may be behind the eight ball on this one, but it was entirely new to me and I spent a very long time drooling over it.  By the time I closed my computer, in fact, I was very hungry for some potstickers and a slice of key lime pie.

via I made that!
Fine print: Snacking before browsing is suggested as you will inevitably be very hungry once you start.  Note that many of the recipes are more time intensive than on other food blogs and might be best saved for a dinner party or a best friend's birthday.  Still...they look totally worth it.

Dupont Circle Farmers' Market

Every Sunday I look forward to taking a long walk to the farmers' market. In the winter, it was still a nice ritual, but the selection was meager: Some breads and cheeses, meats and jams. But these past few days of warm weather have already made the market a little brighter.

Baskets of spinach
Apples for tasting
Cheeses
Granola
And a stroller-bound onlooker

For all you DCers, as of today, the Dupont farmers' market is now running on its summer hours, Sunday 8:30 AM - 1 PM. Woo!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Or, as Andy would say, Happy St. Patrick Dempsey Day!  (Now that's a holiday I can endorse.)  Here's his photoshopped rendition:

I think I'll celebrate by drinking a yummy beer and watching Grey's Anatomy. :)

The Friday Find: Power Breakfast

This week's Friday Find comes in the form of a healthy and cheap-to-make power breakfast.  This is my family's granola recipe, and what I love about it (aside from it being really yummy) is that there are endless variations.

via Diary of a Locavore
5 cups old-fashioned oats
1 cup oat bran
1 cup All Bran or Kashi GoLean
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup mild olive oil
2 teaspoons real vanilla

That's the recipe in its most basic form.  I like to add a heaping cup of dried cranberries or raisins, and chopped dates are yummy in it, too.  I also usually add unsweetened dried coconut for a little extra flavor.  If I ever feel like I'm in a granola rut, I find that browsing through the bulk food aisle at Whole Foods is great inspiration for new ingredients.

*Don't sweat it if you don't have all of the ingredients listed here.  Aside from the oats, almost everything in the recipe can be substituted with something else that you have kicking around your cupboards.

Sunday Sewing

I spent most of this rainy Sunday sewing. And I am super excited to show you the finished product: A dinosaur toiletry bag made with this pattern from Prudent Baby. It has soft flannel fabric on the outside and a waterproof green vinyl on the inside.

More details for those who may want to make this: While the original pattern calls for an oilcloth interior, I found a remnant of vinyl for $3 at a fabric store in Virginia, so I decided to go with that. Worked like a charm, and the interior is still waterproof. I also made this bag slightly smaller than the one in the original pattern (as recommended by Prudent Baby, using a 14" zipper and fabric squares of 14" x 12").

Next I'd like to try making this bag with a fun oilcloth, like this camera pattern oilcloth.

Enjoy the rest of your lazy Sunday :)

Saturday Afternoon

It was a great Saturday. Birthday brunch for Lisa at Meridian Pint, long walk through Adams Morgan, and a quick stop at a beautiful flower shop.

If you live in the DC area and you are looking for tasteful and affordable flowers, I'd recommend you stop by A Little Shop of Flowers. It's a fun experience, the store smells totally awesome, the staff is super friendly, and you leave with something beautiful.

The Friday Find

Target flats. Inexpensive and surprisingly well-made. (I'm not saying they're crafted from the finest Italian leather, but you get the point. I can tell you that mine have lasted for years!) The ones below range in price from just $20-$25! If you skip your morning latte for just 3-4 days you could own a pair of these!! Or, more likely, if you accidentally buy an expensive dress and feel the need to somehow compensate, these may be your solution :)

Imitation Jack Rogers for 1/5 of the price. Niiiiice.

Happy, happy Friday xo

Fabricworm!

So I just received an old Singer sewing machine (circa 1988-1992) from my mom. It looks a whole lot like this:

(Via Craftster.org)

While I am super excited to make copious amounts of place mats and pillowcases, I live in DC, and there is only one lonely fabric store in this whole city. Ridiculous! And it is totally overpriced/I do not need Prada fabric to make an apron.

Thus, I turn to Fabricworm.com, the best place on earth the internet to get fabric. Awesome oilcloths, imported Japanese fabrics (including these elephants and apples!), and sales galore. They've got some of the best patterns around. Go take a look :)

Happy almost Friday xo!
